Where I Stand

Ensuring Affordable Housing
Housing is a human right, and no parent should ever have to wonder if they won’t be able to put a roof over their child’s head. In my time in the General Assembly, I am proud to have:

-
Banned landlords from turning away potential tenants just because they use a housing voucher

-
Protected tenants from predatory landlords by capping late fees on rent and requiring landlords to return security deposits within 45 days

-
Strengthened tenant’s rights by ensuring the right to reasonable attorney fees

-
Introduced legislation to ban discrimination in housing land use decisions

-
Introduced legislation to create a low income housing tax credit and bring more affordable housing to the Commonwealth
Criminal Justice Reform
In my time working as Deputy Attorney General, I was guided by one principle: equal justice under the law. For too long, Black and brown people in Virginia have been disproportionately criminalized by our justice system. Now, as your delegate, I pledge to do everything in my power to bring true equity to our criminal justice system. In my time as Delegate, I have:

-
Introduced legislation to end Qualified Immunity and hold law enforcement officers accountable for their actions

-
Worked with advocates to create a statewide Marcus-Alert system

-
Introduced legislation to permit the admission of evidence concerning a defendant's mental health in court

Safer, Stronger Schools
If my four years on the Richmond School Board and my two children have taught me anything, it’s that the job of building a better future for our kids is never done. Our education system must be set up to make sure that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. As Delegate, I:

-
Disrupted the school to prison pipeline by preventing students from being charged with disorderly conduct on school grounds

-
Limited long-term suspensions for students to 45 days

-
Received a 100% rating from the Virginia Education Association in 2020

Cleaner, Greener Virginia
Standing up to protect Virginia’s natural environment is about more than keeping our grass green. It’s about strengthening our infrastructure by preventing a record number of days with extreme heat that cause roadways to buckle. It’s about preserving the health of our waterways, and the economic development that relies on them. It’s about making sure that we have a Virginia we are proud to leave to the next generation.
As Delegate, I:

-
Introduced legislation to allow Virginians to buy 100% renewable energy

-
Scored 100% on the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club’s 2020 scorecard

-
Regularly received a 100% rating from the Virginia League of Conservation Voters
